Iran parliament elects 3 legal scholars to Constitutional Council

Tehran – In an open session held on Wednesday, Iran’s Parliament elected three jurists to the Constitutional Council, the influential constitutional body tasked with supervising elections and vetting legislation for compliance with Islamic and constitutional principles.

Lawmakers reviewed the qualifications and policy proposals of six candidates nominated by the judiciary. Following individual presentations and parliamentary debate, a paper ballot was conducted.

Of the 269 lawmakers present, Hadi Tahan Nazif secured the most votes with 257, followed by Gholamreza Mola-Beigi with 226, and Seyed Behzad Pourseyed with 178. These three candidates were officially elected to serve as the Council’s legal members for a new term.

The Constitutional Council, also known as Guardian Council, comprises 12 members: six Islamic jurists appointed directly by the Leader and six jurists nominated by the head of the judiciary and approved by Parliament.

As one of the most powerful institutions in the Islamic Republic, the Council plays a decisive role in the legislative process and electoral oversight, including the approval of candidates for presidential, parliamentary, and Assembly of Experts elections.
