Islamic Republic Day marks an important milestone in Iran’s history: Constitutional Council
“The 12th of Farvardin (April 1) 1979, the Islamic Republic Day, is undoubtedly one of the most historic and decisive days in the history of Iran as the Islamic Revolution emerged victorious against the authoritarian rule of the domestic monarchical system under the leadership of the late Imam Khomeini and people’s valor and heroic resistance”, the Council said.
It added, “On the 12th of Farvardin 1979, Iranians voted yes to the establishment of an Islamic Republic in the country and their commitment and vigilance based Iran’s political system on Islam”.
The Council went on to add that it has been for more than forty years that the enemies have been hatching plots against our people and system, but the Islamic Republic continues on path of progress with power under the guidelines of Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei.
“The Constitutional Council will also continue to safeguard both Islamism and Jumhuriyat (Republicanism),” the Council said, congratulating the Iranian nation on the occasion and renewed its allegiance to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution.
In a landmark two-day referendum held on March 30-31, 1979, more than 98.2 percent of eligible Iranians voted “yes” to the establishment of an Islamic Republic in the country. The vote, which was held less than two months after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, is considered a turning point in the modern history of Iran. Since then, the nation annually celebrates Farvardin 12 (April 1) on the Iranian calendar as the Islamic Republic Day.
