1st secretary of Constitutional Council passes away; Ayatollah Jannati, spokesman offer condolences

Iran’s prominent cleric, Grand Ayatollah Lotfollah Saafi Golpayegani, passed away at the age of 103 following a cardiac arrest at a hospital in the holy city of Qom.

Ayatollah Golpayegani’s office said the senior scholar had been hospitalized in Qom over the past week and passed away late Monday.

He had been teaching and researching in the seminary of Qom for many years, during which he trained hundreds of researchers and wrote dozens of scientific books.

He was a member of the Assembly of Constitutional Experts which is tasked with appointing the Leader of the Islamic Revolution and the first secretary of the Guardian Council.

Ayatollah Golpayegani was also one of the pillars in the field of explaining and promoting Islamic Jurisprudence and a great master in mysticism and practical ethics.

The Constitutional Council’s spokesman Hadi Tahan-Nazif in a message on Tuesday offered condolences over the demise of the senior cleric, hailing Ayatollah Golapayegani’s “tireless efforts defending the Constitution as well as the Sharia as a Faqih member of the Guardian Council”.  

Later in the day, Ayatollah Jannati, the secretary of the Council, also offered condolences over the death of the prominent jurist and insightful cleric, saying, "The demise of the Grand Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani caused great sorrow and grief. It is a great loss to Iran and the entire Muslim Ummah".
