Secretary of the Constitutional Council Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said the US embassy takeover by Iranian youth and students in 1979 shattered the US’s delusions of grandeur and hegemony.

Aban 13th shattered US’ delusions of grandeur: Ayatollah Jannati

Addressing the Council’s regular weekly meeting on Wednesday, November 3, Ayatollah Jannati said, “The 13th of Aban, which marks the seizure of the US den of espionage by Iranian students [in Tehran in 1979], is truly the Day of Allah because on this day the US hegemonic power was shattered”.

Noting that we should still take pride in what our brave youth did and thank God for giving the Islamic Republic of Iran such power to fight the Global Arrogance, the senior cleric called on media to cover the issue, work on the historical event, and portray the significance of this day.

On November 4, 1979, and in less than a year after the victory of the Islamic Revolution that toppled a US-backed monarchy, Iranian university students that called themselves "students following the line of (the late) Imam (Khomeini)" seized the US embassy in Tehran, which had become a center of espionage and planning to overthrow the newly established Islamic system in Iran.

The students who seized the embassy later published documents proving that the compound was indeed engaged in plans and measures to overthrow the Islamic republic.

Every year on the 13th day of the Iranian month of Aban (which this year falls on November 3), the Iranian nation, particularly the students, hold rallies across the country to mark the day.
